The members of the ‘’Middle of the road’’ group are originating from the Scottish town of Glasgow. The story of the group begins with the Lewis brothers – Ian and Eric – which started playing music together when they were all school in a group called ‘’The Dominoes’’. Later, they came a cross drummer Ken Andrew, a graduate of the Glasgow University, where he studied Electrical Engineering . Together, they began to play as a semi-professional group. The fourth member, the girl vocalist Sally Carr, worked in hairdressing before joining up with Ian, Eric and Ken.

After about nine months of playing together under the name of ‘’Part Four’’, they decided to adopt Latin American music and called themselves ‘’Las Caracas’’. Under this name they worked in different Clubs, turning in early 1970 professional and adopting the name ‘’Middle of the Road’’.

Their first job under this new title was in Italy, where are producer of the record company ‘’RCA Italiana’’ discovered theme, arranging to have a recording test in Rome. In October 1970 they made their first professional recording with ‘’Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’’. Shortly afterwards, they were invited to collaborate for a promotional film advertising ‘’FIAT’’ `s cars. During this film they recorded their second signal ‘’ Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum’’. In March 1971 the got the news that ‘’Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’’ has taken off in Spain and Belgium, as well as in Great Britain, from were it went as number one all over the world, soon followed by ‘’ Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum’’. The third single, with ‘’Soley, Soley’’ had sales rivalling those of ‘’Chirpy’’ and then there was no stopping them with further hit singles ‘’ Sacramento’’ and ‘’ Samson And Delilah’’. From this time until now, their successes can be shortly pointed out as follows;

- 43 gold discs and awards from all over the world.

- A number one in at least one country every week for the past two years.

- First LP ‘’Acceleration’’ a hit throughout the continent.

- Appeared at the 1971 San Remo Festival.

- Appeared at the International Venice Festival in September 1971 and won the ‘’Golden Gondola’’ award at the International Venice Festival in 1972.

- Sung at the UNICEF 25^th Anniversary Show in The Hague in October 1971, together with Petula Clarke and Danny Kaye.

- Appeared at the 1972 Bratislava Song Festival.

- Appeared as guests at the 1972 MIDEM Gala Show.

- Guested at the Grand Dala du Disque in Amsterdam in February 1972.

- Made a record with Sophia Loren.

- Toured the four corners of the world, including Europe, America, Australia and Asia, and appeared on every major TV show throughout Europe.

Группа «Середина дороги» образовалась в шотландском городе Глазго. История её начинается с братьев Льюисов – Яна и Эрика. Они начали играть музыку в школе в группе под названием «Домино». Позже к ним присоединился кросс-барабанщик Кен Эндрю, выпускник Университета из Глазго, где он изучал электротехнику. Вначале они играли как полупрофессиональная группа. Четвёртая участница группы, вокалистка Салли Карр до прихода в группу работала в парикмахерской.

Проработав девять месяцев в группе под названием «Часть четвёртая», ребята решили играть латиноамериканскую музыку и поменяли название ансамбля на «Лас Каракас». В составе «Лас Каракаса» они выступали в различных клубах. В начале 1970-х годов начали играть на профессиональном уровне, поменяв название коллектива на «Середину дороги».

Их выступление в Италии было замечено продюсером звукозаписывающей компании «RCA Italiana», который в Риме первым организовал запись группы «Середина дороги». В октябре 1970 года они на профессиональном уровне записали первую свою композицию «Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep».

Вскоре после этого им было предложено принять участие в фильме, рекламирующем автомобили FIAT. В это время они записали свой второй сингл «Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum». В марте 1971 года появилась новость о том, что в Испании, Бельгии и Великобритании композиция «Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep» взлетела на вершины хит-парадов, а вскоре стала ТОП 1 на мировой музыкальном Олимпе. За ним последовал и сингл «Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum». 

Третий сингл с песней «Soley, Soley»

имел не меньшую популярность, чем первые два и по продажам альбомов конкурировал с «Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep». Затем были выпущены хитовые синглы «Sacramento»

и «Samson And Delilah».

С этого времени их успехи могут быть кратко обозначены следующими пунктами:

- 43 диска и награды со всего мира;

- Номер один, по крайней мере, в одной стране каждую неделю в течение 1971 – 1972 годов;

- LP «Acceleration» стал первым на всём европейском континенте;

- В 1971 году принял участие на фестивале в Сан Ремо.

- В сентябре 1971 года и в 1972 году участвовал в Международном Венецианском Фестивале, где в 1972 году получил Гран-при «Золотая Гондола».

- В октябре 1971 года выступал на 25-й юбилейной выставке ЮНИСЕФ вместе в Петулой Кларк и Дэнни Кеем.

- В 1972 году выступал на Братиславском Фестивале песни.

- Участвовали в качестве гостей на гала-шоу фестиваля «MIDEM 72».

- В феврале 1972 года был гостем на фестивале Grand Dala du Disque в Амстердаме.

- Участвовал в записи диска с Софи Лорен.

- Гастролировал по Европе, Америке, Австралии, Азии, участвовал в каждом крупном телешоу по всей Европе.
